President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law.

The President assented to the bill at exactly 12:25 PM on Friday at a brief ceremony held at the Council Chamber of the Aso Villa in Abuja. In his address, President Buhari said he received inputs from relevant government’s ministries, departments and agencies after careful reviews of the Bill and its implications to democratic processes in Nigeria.

According to him, the Bill will improve and engender clarity, effectiveness and transparency of the election process, and reduce to the incidences of acrimony arising from dissatisfied candidates and political parties. The Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, witnessed the signing of the bill. Members of the President’s cabinet in attendance included his Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, among others.
