Manchester United suffered a shocking defeat on Wednesday night as
fourth-tier side Grimsby Town knocked them out of the League Cup.
The match ended 2-2 at Blundell Park before Grimsby won 12-11 in a
dramatic penalty shootout.
Charles Vernam and former United youth player Tyrell Warren scored in
the first half to give Grimsby a 2-0 lead.
After a weather delay caused by heavy rain and lightning, United pulled
one back through Bryan Mbeumo before Harry Maguire’s late header
made it 2-2.
The game was decided by a tense penalty shootout lasting 18 minutes.
United missed crucial chances, including efforts from Matheus Cunha and
Mbeumo, allowing Grimsby to complete a famous victory and send their
fans into wild celebrations.
