Governor Peter Mbah has pledged to immortalize the late Nigerian football legend,
Chairman Christian Chukwu, as his remains have been committed to mother earth at
his hometown, Obe, Nkanu West local government area of Enugu state.
Chukwu who died in the early hours of Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the age of 74, was
born on January 4, 1951 into the family of late Vincent and Rebecca Chukwu of
Umuikeowo, Obe, and was the first among six other siblings.
He was also the head coach of the Kenyan national team in 1998 and handled clubs
like Iwuanyanwu Nationale, now known as Heartland FC, and Rangers International
Enugu.
Delivering a sermon during the funeral church service, the Anglican Bishop of Enugu
Diocese, Right Rev. Samuel Ike admonished Christians to be mindful of the names
they give their children, saying the meaning of one's name speaks volumes and
determines his path of life as exemplified in the life and time of the late Christian
Chukwu.
The Bishop while charging Christians to always live a righteous life and be prepared for
the last day, said one's legacy lives forever and commended Enugu State Governor
Peter Mbah for his promise to immortalize the late Super Eagles Coach.
On his part, the state governor, Mbah described the deceased as an inspiration,
epitome of simplicity and humility and a great loss to the state and Nigeria at large,
urged the family to find solace in the assurance of resurrection and in the exemplary life
he lived as a disciplined, dignified, empathetic and polite gentleman.

The governor further urged the children to take pride in the legacies their father left
behind and also uphold those legacies with great dignity and honour.

The governor also declared that the Enugu State Government would take responsibility
for the welfare of 109 ex-Rangers players, working with the Federal Government to
further immortalize Chukwu’s name and achievements.

His final journey commenced on Sunday, August 10, 2025, with a Service of Songs at
St. Andrew’s Basilica Anglican Church, Trans Ekulu, Enugu, and a colloquium on
The Life and Times of Christian Chukwu, the Chairman, on Thursday, August 14, at
the Enugu Sports Club.
