President Bola Tinubu has announced a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for Nigerian workers. This announcement was made during a meeting with leaders of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on Thursday.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, stated that the new minimum wage will be reviewed every three years to ensure it remains fair and adequate. Onanuga added that labour leaders expressed their appreciation for Tinubu’s considerate decision. Additionally, President Tinubu committed to addressing the outstanding four months’ salaries owed to university unions, showcasing his commitment to resolving labor issues.

The official statement highlighted, “President approves ₦70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with a promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years. President Tinubu also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals in paying the minimum wage.”

During the meeting, which was the second between the parties within a week, labour leaders lauded President Tinubu for his supportive actions. The President also assured that he would use his executive powers to meet the demands of university unions regarding unpaid salaries.
