Enugu State lawmaker, Chima Obieze, has condemned the continuous detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu. He noted that the detention was responsible for the increasing violence and weekly sit-at-home in the South East region. Obieze who stated these on Tuesday during the 10th Annual Youth Peace Conference, tagged, “Peace and self-wellness at the Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu, point out that the federal government’s action threatens the peace in South East, as people see the detention of the IPOB leader as plan to further marginalize the region.

While calling for immediate release of Kanu, the lawmaker wondered why the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami refused to obey the order of the Appeal Court, which discharged and acquitted him. Obieze however said that he will ensure that the peace being enjoyed in the state is sustained by engaging the youths positively and warned the youths against allowing politicians to use them to cause violence during the 2023 general elections.

In his welcome address, the Vice chancellor of the University, professor Christian Anieke, said conference has afforded notable personalities opportunity to reflect on initiatives and actions that will promote peace in the society. While renaming the annual event as Reverend Sister Mary Gloria Njoku Peace Conference, in honour of its initiator, Anieke noted that peace is not an external but internal feature of humans, adding that only a peaceful person can give peace.
