The Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has issued a firm statement condemning any efforts to undermine Nigeria’s democratic process. Fagbemi asserted that the only constitutionally acceptable method for altering the current administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, is through the ballot box at the end of its term.

Addressing a valedictory court session in Abuja in honor of the retiring Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kayode Ariwoola, Fagbemi underscored the government’s dedication to upholding democratic values and the rule of law. He emphasized that Nigeria’s leadership should be changed only through the transparent electoral process outlined in the constitution.

Fagbemi warned that any attempt to subvert the democratic process would be considered treasonable, and those responsible would face the full consequences of the law. He stressed that while the government remains committed to safeguarding the fundamental rights of all citizens, any infringement of these rights, outside the bounds of the constitution, would not be tolerated.

The AGF also highlighted the administration’s efforts to reform the justice sector, aiming to eliminate barriers to modernization and efficiency. He referenced the recent 300 percent salary increase for judicial officers as a step toward enhancing the judiciary’s standing and effectiveness.

In his farewell speech, Chief Justice Ariwoola called for measures to address the backlog of cases at the apex court. He noted that delays in justice, due to lengthy waiting periods for case resolutions, have been a significant issue for litigants and lawyers.

Chief Justice Ariwoola retired on Thursday after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
