President Bola Tinubu has instructed all security and intelligence chiefs to intensify efforts against crude oil theft in the Niger Delta. This directive was revealed by Mele Kyari, Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), during a press briefing following a closed-door meeting with the Defence Chief and other security heads at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

Kyari emphasized that oil theft and pipeline vandalism have escalated into a national crisis, jeopardizing Nigeria’s economic stability. He highlighted that addressing these issues is crucial for restoring the country’s oil production to the expected levels.

“We are here to collaborate with the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) as per the President’s directive. The CDS has been tasked with managing the crisis in the Niger Delta. Oil theft and vandalism have reached a critical point, and the President has mandated immediate action to resolve this and restore our national production capacity,” Kyari stated.

He underscored the necessity of inter-agency cooperation, involving the armed forces, police, the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI), and the Department of State Services (DSS), to tackle this crisis effectively. “Without stabilizing oil and gas production, economic stability remains unattainable. The President is committed to addressing these challenges to safeguard our nation’s future,” Kyari added, noting the visible progress from coordinated efforts.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, reaffirmed the military’s commitment to eradicating vandalism and criminal activities in the South-South region. “The ongoing issues in the South-South have persisted for too long. We are determined to end this,” Musa declared. “Our goal is to ensure the South-South is free from vandalism and criminality, facilitating the NNPC and other stakeholders to enhance production. We appeal to the communities for their understanding and cooperation.”

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, also committed to combating oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta. He urged all stakeholders, including citizens, to unite in resolving these challenges. “We recognize the difficulties ahead, but we must work together to overcome them. I assure you that you will see tangible results soon,” Egbetokun promised.
