Nigerian evangelist and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA), Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, has passed away at the age of 80. The announcement was made on his official Instagram page, @Uma_Ukpai, on Monday, confirming that the revered preacher died on October 6, 2025.
Uma Ukpai’s ministry spanned over six decades, leaving an indelible mark on Christianity in Nigeria and beyond. He was known for his fiery sermons, large scale crusades, and commitment to empowering church leaders. His teachings emphasized faith, healing, and compassion, inspiring millions across Africa and globally.
Tributes have poured in from notable figures, including President Bola Tinubu, who described Ukpai as “a beacon of faith whose voice inspired millions.” The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) hailed him as “a unifying voice who stood for righteousness and truth in public life”.
Ukpai’s humanitarian work included establishing the Uma Ukpai Eye Centre and King of Kings Hospital, providing free and subsidized healthcare to rural communities. He also founded the Uma Ukpai Polytechnic and School of Theology, offering scholarships to hundreds of students.
The family has announced a week long celebration of his life, beginning with a night of tributes in Uyo and concluding with a thanksgiving service in his hometown of Asaga, Abia State. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
