Ahead of the 2023 general elections, journalists have been urged to live up to expectations and ensure they hold leaders accountable in a bid to ensure developmental projects for the country. The Executive Director and Project Team Leader for Wadata Media and Advocacy Center, WAMAC, Zubair Abdurra’uf Idris made this known on Thursday in Abuja in a welcome address to commence the 3 days project review meeting and training workshop on investigative journalism for anti corruption and accountability, using the local language. Alhaji Zubairu further noted that the only way the country can get it right is by electing leaders who are incorruptible while adding that the aim of the meeting was to review their performances for the past years and profer solutions on the way forward.
Meanwhile, the Wadata Media and Advocacy Center with support from Mac Arthur foundation commenced since three years ago with the sole aim of giving journalists the opportunity to investigate and hold leaders accountable also letting the masses know some of the corrupt practices committed by the leaders. Our correspondent who is in Abuja for the training reports that the training which started today continues tomorrow March 05 2022. Meanwhile, The African / Country Director of Mac Arthur Foundation, Dr. Kole Shettima, thanked the Journalists and participants for their efforts and input in the fight against corruption. He asked that more effort should be put in place to make sure that the fight against corruption gets to the grassroots.
Shettima, also talked about the effort of MacAuthur foundation in the fight against corruption on the part of women, he talked about the programs and resources that has been put in place to make sure that corruption is eradicated especially when it concerns women. Shettima highlighted the role of the foundation with regards to the safety of Journalists who are participants of the program.
He said that the employers need to be pressured to provide adequate security for their employees (journalists).
He also talked about the need for insurance policies for journalists.
