Authorities at the Plateau State police Command said Police says it has rearrested seven inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Jos.
This followed the attack on the correction facility in the state capital by a yet-to-be-identified group of gunmen on Sunday.
The statePolice Public Relations Officer, Ubah Ogaba confirmed the rearrests of the inmates in a statement revealing that, the Commissioner of Police, Bartholomew Onyeka, led a reinforcement to the scene of the incident.
According to the command’s spokesman, the police immediately began a stop and search operation which led to the re-arrests of seven escapees.
While the rearrested inmates are in custody, another person who escaped from the centre is said to have voluntarily surrendered himself to the police.
Meanwhile, Officials of the Correctional Center in the early hours of today recovered several dead bodies within the premises. News Correspondent who was at the Yard reports that, Seven dead bodies were counted with one of them identified as NCC officer who was shot dead during the attack as unconfirmed report says there are several bodies inside the facility.
Controller Jos Correctional Center, Samuel Aguda while addressing the Press also said another Personnel was shot in the arm when the invaders arrived at the Custodial Center. He also confirmed that the Intelligence Unit and that of Records of the Correctional Centre were set ablaze by the Bandits.
Similarly, the Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has condemned the attack on the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Jos on Sunday when gunmen stormed the facility in large number with sophisticated weapons.
Governor Lalong while condemning the unfortunate incident however praised the gallantry of officers and men of the Custodial Centre who rose to the occasion to prevent the plans of the criminals whose mission was to facilitate the escape of inmates and also cause destruction to the facility.
Lalong also praised the quick reaction of other security agencies including the Police, Operation Safe Haven, DSS, NSCDC and Operation Rainbow who responded swiftly to the situation and took charge of the general area leading to entrapment of the assailants as well as arrest of fleeing inmates.
While describing the sad event as one too many in the nation, Lalong said it was time a holistic approach is applied in bringing such attacks and jail breaks to an end in order to guarantee the safety of inmates, correctional officers, and the larger society from criminals who choose to attack the very essence of Nigeria’s legal system by disrupting law and order.
