The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, MDCAN, has
urged government at all levels to desist from further appointing non-doctors
into the consultants cadre in hospitals.
This was contained in a communique issued by the MDCAN President,
Apollos Ndukuba and the General Secretary, Augustine Duru at the end
of its Biennial Delegates' Meeting and Scientific Conference in Enugu.
According to Ndukuba, if this trend continued, it will bring about an
unhealthy work environment in the various hospitals which would result in
untold hardship on patients who were admitted in the hospitals.
The Association also frowned at the disenfranchisement of medical
professors from contesting for the office of the Vice Chancellor in
universities.
MDCAN urged the government at all levels to urgently put in place
measures to cushion the effect of the present economic hardship on the
people.
It observed that with the Japa syndrome, the remaining doctors are being
overstretched and compelled to overlook their healthcare needs as they
strive to meet those of the populace.
The Association further observed with dismay that “the government has
continued to appoint consultants in the professions allied to medicine and
this has continued to cause confusion and chaos in the hospitals as it
concerns patient care and safety.
