Ghana defeated reigning champions South Africa 4-3 on penalties
following a 1-1 draw to clinch third place at the Women's Africa Cup of
Nations, with goalkeeper Andile Dlamini's own goal cancelling out
Nonhlanhla Mthandi's first-half opener in Casablanca during 90 minutes.
Banyana Banyana, who defeated Morocco 2-1 in the Rabat final three
years ago, end the tournament outside the podium places for the first time
since 2016.
It was also Ghana's first WAFCON medal since that 2016 edition.
South Africa took the lead just before halftime when Nonhlanhla Mthandi
found the net in the 45th minute. Ghana responded in the second half,
equalising in the 68th minute through an own goal by South African
goalkeeper Andile Dlamini.
With no further goals after regulation time, the match proceeded directly to
penalties. Ghana converted four of their five spot kicks, while South African
missed two out of five kicks.
The result echoes the 2016 WAFCON third-place match in Yaoundé,
where Ghana also defeated South Africa 1-0 to claim bronze.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Super Falcon will play the final with the host
country, Morocco later in the day
