Former Minister of Education Obiageli Ezekwesili has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu for allegedly using security forces to intimidate Nigerian citizens. Ezekwesili’s condemnation follows the recent arrest of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero and a raid on the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) office in Abuja by Department of State Services (DSS) operatives.
In a statement posted on her X account, Ezekwesili expressed concern over what she described as “draconian” measures taken by the government amidst worsening economic conditions. She questioned the rationale behind the administration’s actions, particularly given the already difficult circumstances faced by the Nigerian population.
Ezekwesili called for immediate reforms, including the release of Ajaero, the return of SERAP’s documents, and compensation for any damages caused. She also demanded the release of all protesters detained without just cause and urged the government to initiate a citizen-led national dialogue and constitutional review.
The DSS has since released Joe Ajaero after a 15-hour detention, but the incident has further fueled criticisms of the government’s handling of dissent and economic distress.
