In a renewed effort to combat the spread of fake news, the Commissioner
of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Maaman Bitrus Giwa, has pledged
his full support to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State
Chapter.
The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the
NUJ to the police headquarters in Enugu.
CP Giwa, who expressed concern over the rise of unverified and poorly
investigated reports, emphasized the need for a strong and transparent
partnership between the police and the media. He called for
professionalism and accuracy in journalism, stressing that the media must
play a critical role in promoting peace and security in the state.
CP Giwa also commended the administration of Governor Peter Mbah,
describing it as focused and visionary, especially in its efforts to create a
secure and investor-friendly environment in the state.
Earlier, NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Obinna Ogbuka, praised the
Enugu Police Command for its professionalism and dedication to duty,
reaffirming the Union’s commitment to supporting the police in curbing the
menace of fake journalism.
Noting that the chapter is working on creating a comprehensive database
of practicing journalists at both state and federal levels Ogbuka added that,
the innovation will help distinguish trained professionals from impostors
who parade themselves as journalists.
He assured the police of continued collaboration, noting that journalists and
law enforcement agencies are partners in progress.
The visit is part of the NUJ State Chapter’s ongoing engagement with key
stakeholders to foster ethical journalism and build a stronger relationship
between the media and institutions.
