The presidency has provided insights into the discussions between Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in London.

According to reports, King Charles III welcomed President Tinubu on Wednesday, during which they engaged in a private, high-level dialogue focused on crucial topics. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, highlighted that the Nigerian leader reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to tackling climate change while ensuring energy security.

The meeting centered around potential collaborations in preparation for the upcoming COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa. Both leaders emphasized the need for robust partnerships to address climate change and enhance bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UK.

President Tinubu underscored Nigeria’s commitment to adopting global sustainability strategies that align with its developmental goals, stressing the necessity of balancing climate initiatives with energy demands to support the nation’s growing population and economy.

The discussions also touched on climate financing, with both leaders expressing interest in strengthening their cooperative efforts. They acknowledged Nigeria’s pivotal role in Africa and the Commonwealth and how this influence can be harnessed to achieve common environmental and economic goals.

This meeting marks the first encounter between the two leaders since their previous discussion at the COP 28 Climate Summit in Dubai last year. Onanuga noted that this latest meeting was initiated at the King’s request.
