The 260 Local Government Councilors in Enugu State have held a candle light procession for their colleagues, late Sylvester Ofunwa. Ofunwa, the Councilor representing Eha-Ulo Ward in Nsukka Local Government Area, was murdered by suspected hoodlums at his home- town in Eha-Alumona community on Sunday, July 16. Addressing journalists after the procession on Tuesday, the Coordinator of Councilors in the state, Nnamdi Odo, said they gathered to mourn the gruesome killing of one of them. According to Odo, the late lawmaker until his death, was a great crusader for justice and community development.
The coordinator commended the state’s commissioner of police and all the security agencies for their speedy response in investigating the murder case of the departed colleague. While urging the police to ensure speedy action to bring the perpetrators to book, he asked the Police boss to beef up security in various political wards in the state.
Odo called on the state government to review the salaries and other welfare packages of the local government lawmakers, considering the current economic hardship. He pointed out that their monthly take home and allowances do not reflect
the present situation of the country.
