The Organized Labor unions have agreed to suspend the nationwide strike for a period of five days, allowing for uninterrupted meetings with the tripartite committee tasked with determining the new national minimum wage.
This development was revealed by a source close to the leadership of the labor unions, according to reports. Earlier, it was reported that labor leaders had a successful meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, and other government officials on Monday. During this meeting, a resolution was reached indicating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to establishing a new minimum wage higher than the previously proposed N60,000.
The parties also agreed that the Tripartite Committee, comprising representatives from the government, employers, and labor unions, would convene daily meetings for the next week to arrive at an agreeable National Minimum Wage figure. Today, at 10am, during a scheduled meeting with the Federal Government’s Tripartite Committee, the Labor unions formally suspended their strike action.
Consequently, all government and private offices are expected to reopen and resume normal operations in the wake of this development. The suspension of the strike by the labor unions paves the way for focused negotiations on the new minimum wage, with the aim of reaching a mutually acceptable agreement within the designated five-day period.
