President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to consider the request for the release of Nnamdi Kanu after meeting with a group of leaders from the South East under the aegis of Highly Respected Igbo Greats.
He made the pledge on Friday when he received the delegation led by a First Republic parliamentarian and former Minister of Aviation, Mbazulike Amaechi, at the State House in Abuja.
The President was quoted as saying in a statement by his media adviser, Femi Adesina that the request by the group was an extremely difficult demand on him Nigeria leader, adding that the implication of the request is very serious.
An unconditional release of Kanu who is the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra and currently standing trial, according to the President, runs contrary to the doctrine of separation of powers between the Executive and Judiciary.
In his remarks, Amaechi had described the situation in the South East as painful and pathetic, lamenting that businesses have collapsed, education was crumbling, fear has begun to manifest everywhere.
The group leader pleaded for a political, rather than military solution, requesting that if Kanu was released to him as the only First Republic Minister alive, Kanu will no longer say the things he had been saying.
