The Federal Government announced on Wednesday the resumption of mass trials for individuals accused of terrorism and other serious crimes in Nigeria. Abu Michael, spokesperson for the National Counter Terrorism Centre, stated that these trials are part of the government’s commitment to promoting social justice through a transparent administrative process.

Currently, more than 300 suspects are undergoing trial, with five distinguished judges presiding over dedicated courts and chambers to ensure swift justice in terrorism and related cases.

The trials involve various stakeholders, including prosecutors from the Complex Casework Group (CCG) and defense attorneys from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON).

According to the statement, “The ongoing trials adhere to international criminal justice standards and are being conducted by the Federal High Court of Nigeria, with support from the CCG of the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and other key stakeholders under the coordination of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

“More than 300 suspects are currently on trial across five courts and chambers established to expedite justice in ongoing terrorism and related cases in the country.

“The trials involve multiple stakeholders, including CCG prosecutors and defense counsel from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON).

“Prior to this, over 800 case files were reviewed and charges were prepared to ensure effective prosecution and appropriate delivery of justice.

“Between 2017 and 2018, the ongoing trials have resulted in 163 convictions, 882 discharges, and 5 acquittals. Suspects found innocent are undergoing deradicalization processes, engaging in productive activities, and efforts for their reintegration into society are being sustained.

“The NCTC-ONSA is diligently collaborating with relevant authorities to fulfill its mandates and support the current administration’s efforts to achieve good governance and a just society.”
