WOMEN ACTIVIST ASKS ENUGU STATE GOVERNMENT TO SUSTAIN AWARENESS CAMPAIGN AGAINST FEMALE CIRCUMCISION

A women activist, Amaka Nweke, has appealed to the Enugu state government to embarked on sustained awareness campaign against Female Genital Mutilation. She said the awareness campaign has become important, in order to end the harmful practice female circumcision in the state. Nweke stated this on Tuesday in Enugu while bearing her mind on the efforts to end female circumcision as the world marks zero tolerance to Female Genital Cutting. The women activist, who regretted that the practice is championed by elders, disclosed that the practice is going on in many rural communities in Enugu State.

According to her, female genital mutilation is causing pains to the girl-child, which most of the time inflicts life-threatening injury on them or leads to untimely death. She stressed that those who perform the female circumcision are unprofessional, who inflict more pain and harm to the circumcised girl, and expressed the hope that the awareness will end the practice. While arguing that the age-long culture of the people will not be changed in a day, Nweke however asked the government to devise a means to deal with the practice of female circumcision, which she added is a serious violation of girl-child in the state.
